The Low-Down on Biometric Privacy:
Not All Technologies Are Created Equal


Corporations, banks, and governments worldwide must implement more secure means of protecting buildings, data, money, and — most importantly — lives. One thing is certain in this post-9/11 world: Biometric authentication is the answer. But individuals, consumer groups, and elected officials absolutely require protection against hacking, identity theft, corporate negligence, and even Big Brother.

The only feasible solution to this dilemma — providing reliable authentication without sacrificing privacy — is to do it all onboard a card or other device, thus assuring that biometric data need never and can never leave the device. That is, there must be no central database that stores individuals' personal identity data. Biometric authentication must be stand-alone.

But achieving this high-tech Holy Grail has eluded all efforts to date, due to the tremendous processing power required by today’s prevailing authentication algorithms. Until now, it has simply been impossible to perform a completely stand-alone fingerprint authentication, for instance, without using high-powered microprocessors that are too power-hungry to be of practical use, and too expensive to be affordable. This single hurdle has been the obstacle preventing mass-market deployment of biometrics.

What Is "Privacy Assurance"?

Privacy Assurance is just that: the assurance that the individual's privacy can never be compromised, under any circumstances. Consider the example of fingerprint authentication built onto a credit card; key privacy and security benefits of our technology and algorithm include the following:
  • Only authorized users can use the card. Simply touch the sensor and the card "unlocks" and is immediately ready to use like any regular credit card. After a few moments, the card automatically re-locks itself.

  • No passwords or PINs need to be remembered.

  • Biometric data is completely safe. No image of the fingerprint is stored anywhere — neither in a central database nor on the card itself. Instead, a table of neural net weights resides onboard the card, against which the user's fingerprint is matched during each authentication. Because it is mathematically impossible to reverse-derive a fingerprint image from neural net weights, it is impossible for fingerprint information to EVER leave the card, under any circumstances, authorized or unauthorized.

  • All information stored on the card (name, account number, etc.) is secured using industry-standard encyption.
